"All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called 'Hucleberry Finn'," declared Ernest Hemingway." That's how The Record began its review of Windwood Theatricals's recent tour of BIG RIVER that played Kitchener, Ontario in February. The review continues, "There's enough of Twain in BIG RIVER, with book by William Hauptman and music and lyrics by Roger Miller, to justify its seven 1985 Tony awards and to ensure its place in the annals of Americana. The wonderful thing about BIG RIVER is that Miller's score brilliantly encapsulates the spirit of Twain's classic story about a boy and a runaway slave who float down the muddy Mississippi River into the American heart of darkness en route to freedom. The music is inspirational without the slightest whiff of mawkishness from 'Muddy Water,' 'The Crossing,' and 'River In The Rain' in the first act, through 'Worlds Apart,' 'How Blest We Are,' and 'Free At Last' in the second act. Even with the musical's large dollops of low comedy and slapstick (an accurate reflection of the novel), Miller's score prevails as it ranges over country, folk, bluegrass, blues and gospel."
Roger Miller's score won critical throughout the tour. The Reading Eagle & Reading Times said, "There are some gorgeous pieces here, such as 'River In The Rain,' 'Muddy Waters,' and the gospel 'How Blest We Are.' Even the pure silliness of 'Arkansas' has charm."
