Be part of the Richard Rodgers 2002 Centennial Festival

There are no sweeter sounds to our ears than the comment we hear almost daily"If you want a guaranteed box office success, do an R&H show." Well, Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II did have the most successful collaboration in musical theatre history. They were quintessential men of the theatre who formed a unique organization to protect and foster their works and through the years, inspired by their dedication to musical theatre, R&H has amassed an impressive catalogue of musicals.

Richard Rodgers was unique among Broadway composers: he had three distinct eras to his career. His first and longest collaboration was with Lorenz Hart with whom he wrote more than 25 shows from BABES IN ARMS to PAL JOEY -- running the thematic gamut from wide-eyed innocence to droll cynicism. In his post-Hammerstein years he collaborated with such lyricists as Stephen Sondheim, Sheldon Harnick, Martin Charnin and even himself; winning the 1962 Tony Awards for his music and lyrics to NO STRINGS!

By virtually any standard, Richard Rodgers was the pre-eminent theatre composer of the 20th century. His career spanned 60 years. His melodies were charming "Getting To Know You"; carefree "Manhattan"; passionate "Some Enchanted Evening"; bittersweet "Ten Cents A Dance"; inspirational "Climb Ev'ry Mountain"; haunting "The Sweetest Sounds"; lilting "Do I Hear A Waltz?"; and just plain fun "Mountain Greenery."

For six decades Richard Rodgers dedicated his life to the musical theatre. Now, the time is right for the musical theatre to return the favor.2002 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Richard Rodgers. Many special events will be planned to celebrate Rodgers' monumental contribution to the American musical. Here at The R&H Theatre Library, we feel there can be no more fitting tribute than to have every one of our customers present a Richard Rodgers musical in the 2002 season. In fact, why not two? We'll make it easy for you!

By now you are familiar with our annual Spotlight Promotions -- we spotlight one musical from our catalogue and you receive a royalty-free opening night (if you present a minimum number of performances in the designated 12-month period.) Now, to celebrate Mr. Rodgers' genius we will expand our promotion to include two musicals by Richard Rodgers -- with a twist! We'll also extend our promotion to cover 2002 in both the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 seasons: September 2001 through September 2003. In this way, you can present two Richard Rodgers musicals in your 2001-2002 season or your 2002-2003 season and still be part of the celebration. And all the while you'll enjoy savings!

Our goal is to celebrate Rodgers' entire body of work so here's our offer: You choose two musicals â¬" one by R & Hammerstein (his partner & co-founder of our Organization) and one by R & any other of his collaborators -- and receive a royalty-free opening night for BOTH! (usual minimum number of performances apply.)

Think of it you'll be able to select from a list of 22 musicals and three revues. Give your audience popular favorites like THE KING AND I and BABES IN ARMS , or less frequently performed gems like ME AND JULIET and I MARRIED AN ANGEL or DO I HEAR A WALTZ? Choose a theme such as dance: CAROUSEL and ON YOUR TOES. How about early vs. late Rodgers? I'D RATHER BE RIGHT and TWO BY TWO, or BY JUPITER and I REMEMBER MAMA. (Yes, you may select one R & Hart and one R & others!)

Richard Rodgers wrote groundbreaking musicals. THE BOYS FROM SYRACUSE was the first musical to be based on a Shakespearean play (THE COMEDY OF ERRORS.) PAL JOEY was the first to feature an anti-hero as the lead character. OKLAHOMA! is widely credited as the first to use its score to further its plot. We urge you to be just as daring and creative by selecting from the whole range of inventive, inspirational, raucous or romantic musicals of Richard Rodgers.

Don't miss out. Be part of the Richard Rodgers 2002 Centennial Festival. Treat your audience to the music of Broadway's greatest composer and enjoy multiple savings as well. Reduced royalties, increased audiences: these may be the sweetest sounds you'll ever hear. Our helpful staff is standing by to help you join in the celebration.
